Admissions

You can apply to our graduate program directly by printing the Domestic Application or the International Application forms below and mailing them to us. If you apply directly to the Department of Chemistry please do not submit a duplicate copy of your application elsewhere and no fee payment is required. There are no forms for the recommendation letters; however, we ask that the letters be written on university (or company) letterhead and be mailed directly to the Chemistry Department.

Please mail all the required materials for your application to:

Chemistry Graduate Program
Department of Chemistry
Oregon State University

If you are unable to print these forms, please submit the following web form directly to the Chemistry Department and we will mail you hard copies.

If you have any questions regarding admissions we encourage you to contact us by e-mail at chemadm@oregonstate.edu, phone (1-800-557-7319), or fax (1-541-737-2062).

Alternatively, you can visit the University Admissions site and apply on-line. On-line application is currently available only for domestic applicants, and requires payment of a $50 application fee using a credit card at the time the form is submitted.

Required components of a complete application include:

  • a completed application form (note that the 4-digit academic code for Chemistry is 5200)
  • a brief description of your research interests, including desired area(s) of specialization
  • the names, addresses, fax and phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references
  • letters sent directly from the above references*
  • complete official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work**
  • scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)  - are required for all international applicants and strongly recommended for all domestic applicants.
    * Letters of recommendation may be sent to the address listed above, and should speak directly to your academic and research abilities.
** Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for initial screening purposes.  For formal admission, official transcripts are required.

If you are an international applicant, your application must also include official GRE and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores.  Unofficial copies of scores are acceptable for initial screening purposes.  The Chemistry Department general TOEFL minimum requirement is higher than the University requirement of 550.
